50th anniversary DHL Express NL Interview: Kees de Lange

As we approach the 50th anniversary of DHL Express in the Netherlands, we reflect with colleagues who have witnessed the company's growth and transformation. One of them is Kees de Lange, Managing Director, who has been with DHL Express for nearly thirty years. He shares an open and candid conversation about choices, opportunities, and the power of collaboration.

"I started on June 1, 1997," Kees recalls. "My first day was quite special: there were so many new colleagues that the orientation program had to be held in a hotel. For three days, we learned all about DHL, followed by three weeks of hands-on training as a courier. What struck me back then? There was room to contribute by sharing ideas and finding smarter ways to do things. That really appealed to me."

Growing by doing
Kees started as a team leader for a new location that was still under construction. "We started from Rotterdam and within a year, we moved with sixty people to Leidschendam. It happened incredibly fast; the growth was enormous."

Although he had previously managed a much larger team, Kees consciously chose to take a step back. "I wanted to develop myself in logistics, and I succeeded. I hardly ever had to apply for jobs. The growth came naturally as I seized opportunities."

The acquisition by Deutsche Post was an exciting moment. "We got a new image, a different culture. But it was precisely within that context that new possibilities emerged. I was working on process improvement at that time, which was still relatively new. Later, I had the chance to contribute to the merger of two large companies. Projects like that are energizing."

A company in motion
What has changed the most over the years? "We've experienced a lot: mergers, new systems, different structures. At times, we lost a little bit of the original DHL spirit. But that's completely back now. We are truly a strong, independent brand."

According to Kees, the future remains challenging but full of potential. "The world is changing rapidly. However, international trade will continue, and I firmly believe in that. The key is having well-trained people and a focus on quality within a culture where everyone feels at home. That's how we make a difference for our customers. The high-quality products we transport for our clients deserve speed and excellence, which is why our customers remain loyal to DHL Express."

Proud of milestones
Two moments stand out for Kees. "My transition from a staff role back to line management as location manager in Utrecht was significant; it meant being responsible again. And the NORTD project, where we created an entirely new operational infrastructure with new locations, technology, and working methods. That has brought me a lot, even if I didn't realize it at the time."

What does Kees feel when he thinks of DHL Express? "Joy and pride. I've always enjoyed work. Of course, there can be days that aren't great, but the work itself always energizes me. Plus, I have a good balance between work and personal life, which is essential for me."

Why does he stay? It’s all about the people
After nearly thirty years, Kees remains passionate. "It feels like a family. The people make the difference. When I see happy colleagues around me, it energizes me. And that's exactly why working at DHL Express is so special."
