From Costa Rica to the Netherlands: Enzo Rivera took the leap! Curious about how he made the move and what the differences and similarities are between the two countries? Read his story here!
You've been with DHL Express since 2016, but not in the Netherlands at that time. Where did you start?
I started at DHL Express in the United States, coming from Costa Rica. I began as an intern, and after six months, I got the chance to become a Coordinator Facilitator. I held that role for three years, and then I joined the Customs BPO team, also from Costa Rica, where I worked for over three years.
When did you move to the Netherlands and why?
My girlfriend got a job in the Netherlands, and I really wanted to stay with DHL Express. So, I reached out to my network. Through them, I connected with a recruiter in the Netherlands and had an online interview with Customs. We clicked right away, and I soon heard I could start. I moved to the Netherlands in January 2023.
What were your first impressions when you arrived in the Netherlands?
Wow, the rain and the cold! We don’t have it like this in Costa Rica. I also noticed how well-organized everything is here. It’s much quieter than in Costa Rica, where life is more chaotic. For example, the roads are a lot calmer and safer.
How was your first day at DHL Express in the Netherlands? I remember a colleague at the entrance asking what I was there for. I told him it was my first day, and he wished me good luck. It felt familiar right away, just like how we interact in Costa Rica. This feeling only grew stronger as I worked longer. The way we treat each other here is very similar to Costa Rica; it feels like family, and everyone is equal.
What are the cultural differences between the Netherlands and Costa Rica?
In the Netherlands, everything is well organized. For instance, you have to make a reservation for a restaurant; in Costa Rica, it’s much more laid-back. Also, the Netherlands is really a bread country! I miss having a warm meal in the morning and afternoon.
How do you see your future?
I definitely see my future at DHL Express, but I’m not sure yet in which country or role. Right now, I’m really enjoying my time at DHL Express in the Netherlands. My girlfriend is happy in her job too, so I think we’ll be here for a while. Eventually, I’ll go back to Costa Rica, but that might not be until I retire.
What advice would you give to colleagues considering an international career?
Work hard and don’t be afraid! Some people say I was lucky because a position opened up just when I decided to move to the Netherlands. I did have some luck, but I also believe my hard work helped me stand out. If you don’t put yourself out there, people won’t look for opportunities for you.
And finally, why are you #expressproud?
From day one, I knew I wasn’t leaving DHL Express. It makes me happy to see how DHL Express treats its employees. It feels like a family business, and I feel proud whenever I see a DHL Express truck or plane. The company also offers opportunities, and I think I’m a great example of what it can provide.
